Discover Abitibi

Description

The MISSION of the Discover Abitibi Initiative is to coordinate and direct an integrated geoscientific investigation of the Abitibi Greenstone belt of Northeastern Ontario. The vision is a vibrant and sustainable mineral exploration and mining industry in the Timmins and Kirkland Lake areas. The mining and exploration industry employs approximately 25% of the workforce in the area. This workforce is highly trained and well paid. The Discover Abitibi Initiative will endeavour to create more high value jobs allowing this workforce to remain and expand. The economic impact on the region will be positive. Statistics have shown that there are 3 spin off jobs for each mining job created. The mission will be achieved through the unprecedented cooperation and collaboration between Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments and private-sector partners. The success of the project will depend on the cooperation of each of the participants. The overall project will increase the visibility of the Abitibi Greenstone area and provide new areas for exploration. The successful completion of the initiative will form a basis for a MADE IN ONTARIO model for this type of initiative. The project manager will be charged with the development of the business plan, the implementation plan and with acquiring the necessary funds from funding agencies and the private sector, including senior mining companies, junior mining companies and private individuals.
