Introduction [ top ] Dance International magazine is committed to providing exceptional service to our customers and supporters, as well as fostering journalistic/publishing excellence amongst our contributors and suppliers. Since an integral part of our business involves the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, we take the responsibility of respecting our stakeholders' right to privacy very seriously. As a non-profit Canadian magazine with customers and contributors from around the world, our stakeholders are protected by the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which came into effect on January 1, 2004. The purpose of the act is to balance an individual's right to privacy with the need of organizations to collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial activities. Our privacy policy complies with this act. Definitions [ top ] Throughout this policy, the mention of "Dance International (magazine)" or simply "the magazine" refers to both the publication, as well as the staff who produces the publication (editors, business manger, art director and advertising manager). Under PIPEDA, "personal information" is defined as any factual or subjective information that identifies an individual, including: Examples of information that are not considered personal in the act: "Contact Information" means information that would enable an individual to be contacted at a place of business and includes name, position name or title, business telephone number, business address, business email or business fax number. "Commercial Activities" refer to any particular transaction, act or conduct or any regular course of conduct that is of a commercial character. PIPEDA recognizes that non-profit organizations do engage in commercial activities but the following are not considered commercial in this context: DI's Overall Privacy Practices [ top ] [ top ] In general, individuals who subscribe to Dance International, either by completing a subscription card or an electronic form accessible from our website, implicitly consent to the collection and use of personal information for the purposes of fulfilling a magazine subscription. Subscribers and supporters that supply email addresses and agree to be thus contacted by the magazine will receive subscription renewal notices and monthly e-newsletters (Dance Notes) by email. Otherwise, communication with current subscribers will be maintained by post, though these subscribers will not receive the monthly Dance Notes updates from the magazine because they are only distributed via email. Occasionally, the magazine will host contests and surveys, both in the magazine and on our website, to encourage relations with our readers and to further promote our publication. Participants in these promotional initiatives will be given the opportunity to opt out of providing their personal information to the magazine, though any and all information provided will be added to our database for archival purposes. Personal information that was collected prior to January 1, 2004 (before PIPEDA came into effect) is assumed to have been supplied with consent. New subscription renewal notices and subscription cards afford customers the opportunity to expressively consent to communications with the magazine post-PIPEDA.
