Don Smith, CLU, CFP is acknowledged by his peers as an exemplary professional and a leader in his field. Don was a Founding Member of the Conference of Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU) in Ottawa and served as a Board Member from 1992 to 1995. CALU is one of Canada's leading tax and estate planning voices with the Minister of Finance and the Canada Revenue Agency. Don has presented to CALU on a number of occasions on the creative use of life insurance for estate planning and business succession. As a full member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), Don contributes to this unique professional organization that provides education, training, and networking for its members. Don's community involvements include The Calgary Foundation where he served as Board Member from 1999 to 2008 and where he continues to serve on the Donor Relations & Professional Advisors' Committee. He was the Founding Director of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, Calgary Chapter, from 1991 to 1995. Don is the current Chairman of Badminton Alberta and has been an Advisory Committee Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute since 2004. Don is the strategic developer of the IEP™ Insured Endowment Program which uniquely helps wealth holders to enhance their charitable legacies. This proprietary program was established by Don two years after he successfully co-implemented a $50M endowment "“ one of Canada's largest charitable gifts. A graduate of the University of Calgary in 1975, Don established DSI Estate Planning in 1979. He is professionally designated as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). Frequently requested throughout Canada as a speaker on the effective use of life insurance in estate planning, Don has recently presented at Canada's insurance sector's National Advocis Conference in Toronto. In May 2010 Don spoke to the annual CALU meeting in Ottawa on applications of life insurance for high net worth entrepreneurs. In September 2010 Don presented to the Circle of Advisors event for The Calgary Foundation.
