WHO WE ARE (what is CUPE 3906? Am I a member?) WHY A UNION? WORK-RELATED PROBLEMS (what to do in case there is a problem or to prevent one) KNOW YOUR RIGHTS BENEFITS (Wages, dental, childcare, UHIP rebate, hardship fund, etc) COMMITTEES EQUITY RELATED PROBLEMS (racism, sexism, harassment etc.) UNION DEMOCRACY WHO WE ARE: CUPE 3906 is over 2500 part time, temporary and precarious academic workers at McMaster including teaching and research assistants (both graduates and undergraduates , many of whom are international students ), sessional lecturers and music instructors . We are a trade union, a member of the national and global labour movement, and active members of the local social justice community. Like all unions we are a democratic and progressive organization created and sustained by its members for over 15 years to help us cooperate in improving our working and living conditions and our world. Our local is affiliated to Canada’s largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees , through which we work with other locals of academic and public-sector workers. FOR MORE INFORMATION CLICK HERE WHY A UNION? While a university may seem like a strange place to find a union, past experience as well as the example of universities where academic workers are not unionized demonstrates that wages, working conditions and benefits suffer dramatically in a union’s absence. Though we don’t wield wrenches or walk the wards, we are workers, we have an employer, and we need a union. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT OR PROBLEM RELATED TO YOUR WORK: Contact our union right away . The process is confidential and directed by you. Remember: You are not the only one having this problem. We can work to resolve the issue through dialogue or through a formal grievance process. The union is in your corner. Even if you don’t want to pursue the matter or you’re not sure it constitutes a bona-fide at-work problem, let the union know as soon as possible as some options require timely action. No reprisal can be taken against you for contacting your union. COMMON ISSUES INCLUDE: * Overwork – keep track of the hours you work * Unfair hiring or discipline * A work environment you feel is unsafe * Harassment or oppressive behaviour If you feel you have been treated unfairly in any way, tell the union! For more information, check out our grievances page To find out about the steward, or union representative, in your department, click here KNOW YOUR RIGHTS The right to participate in your union without fear of discipline or reprisal and to be represented by your union should you require it
