Description

Crossing the Divide (CTD) is a registered charity, which introduces youth and young adults to a backcountry camping experience. This opportunity is provided to disadvantaged and 'at risk' youth of different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We feel that using the tools of a new context (wilderness) and the tool of ‘perceived risk’ this experience is incredibly valuable for our participants both in their healing and in their growth. We believe that they can translate some of what they have learned on their camping experience into their everyday lives. We hope they can then meet their own personal challenges with more confidence, control and awareness of their abilities. We work with agencies in and around Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. The program offers backcountry trips of varying duration with activities which typically include hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, and top roping. This is combined with instruction on backcountry safety, geography, ecology, and wildlife/environmental conservation. Our highly trained facilitators offer individual and group discussion sessions to help participants internalize their outdoor experiences. Crossing the Divide requires that at least one, preferably two agency staff are present on trip. The Crossing the Divide experience is offered at no cost to all participants as our campers are not generally able to afford wilderness outings due to their personal circumstances. Therefore, all costs including outfitting {equipment and all clothing}, supplies, food, and transportation are borne by the program.
