Conifex Timber Inc. is committed to practicing sustainable forestry. The goal of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is to ensure that we meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We practice a land stewardship ethic that integrates the reforestation, growing, nurturing and harvesting of trees for useful products, with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, biological diversity, wildlife and aquatic habitat, recreation, aesthetics, and the protection of special sites and unique resources.

Conifex will take all reasonable care to comply with all applicable federal and provincial laws and regulations that protect workers, workers rights, the environment and the communities in which they live and operate. In British Columbia the government sets the basic rules for forest management, sets the Allowable Annual Cut (AAC), and monitors our performance and compliance with all forestry, environmental and workplace laws. Our role is to implement the forest practices mandated by the laws and our operational plans.

Conifex is also committed to implementing and maintaining the requirements of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Chain of Custody Standard PEFC ST 2002:2010 (PEFC Standard ) http://www.pefc.org/standards/technical-documentation/pefc-international-standards-2010/item/673-chain-of-custody-pefc-st-20022010 . Our adherence to the PEFC Standard provides our customers and the end consumers the confidence that the raw materials of our products originate from sustainable managed forests.

Conifex has developed positive relations with local aboriginal groups and Nak’azdli, Tl’azt’en and Takla First Nations are all shareholders of Conifex. Conifex directly employs many aboriginals in its sawmills and provides additional opportunities through its contracted harvesting operations. Conifex also supplies planer trim blocks to an aboriginal owned and operated finger-joint plant in Fort St James and contracts with various aboriginal companies to provide services and products, including log procurement, harvesting and silviculture activities.

We provide a wide range of employment opportunities for labourers, trades people, administrators and professionals alike. We purchase supplies, equipment and services locally wherever possible. Where available we utilize qualified local contractors for machine fabrication and repairs, harvesting and reforestation activities. Conifex supports local community initiatives that enhance the quality of life for all citizens and its employees.
