BURLINGTON, ON - Area youth will have the opportunity to challenge themselves in a whole new way with the launch of Five Point Academy at Climber's Rock indoor climbing facility in Burlington. The program, which will begin in September, uses the sport of rock climbing to inspire young people from 6-15 to remain healthy, strong, and determined both mentally and physically. It aims to help youth excel at any sport or activity through the building of skills such as setting goals, staying fit, becoming stronger and remaining focused on tasks. "The sport of indoor rock climbing is not only fun, but also demanding both mentally and physically. It is a great opportunity for young people to learn the principles that will lead them to success in all that they do." said Maria Richardson, Director of Five Point Academy. "With this ambitious new program, we're creating an environment where kids will be both challenged and rewarded for their hard work. Climbing is about 'how the body moves' and therefore is a Foundation Sport for all physical activity and sports. Early participation in climbing develops the most fundamental movement skills, physical and motor abilities, mental abilities, social and emotional abilities and performance skills that carry over into all aspects of life." Five Point Academy is looking for participants who are coachable, respectful, ready to learn, able to maintain a positive attitude, and willing to work to challenge themselves. If needed, youth may earn financial assistance through corporate sponsorship, fundraising and active-exchange work. Richardson has a strong background as both an athlete and coach, with years of experience developing programs and learning techniques to prepare youth for competitive sports. The Academy's coaches all have diverse backgrounds in a variety of different sports, in addition to climbing. "Our number one goal for the Academy is to give youth the chance to get fit, learn the value of discipline and hard work, and strengthen their mental capacity," Richardson said. "No matter what other sports or activities a youth is involved in, this program will help them to reach and exceed the goals they have set for themselves." Although the focus of the Academy is to help participants succeed in a broad spectrum of sports, there will also be opportunities for participants to enter the competitive world of rock climbing. Climber's Rock's under-20 climbing team regularly travels and competes at local, regional, national, and world events. "This program is not just for those who happen to be interested in climbing," Richardson said. "After completing a 12-week session at the Academy, participants will have the power to tackle any challenge with the confidence and strength they need to be successful." Today, rock climbing is one of the fastest-growing sports, providing an effective full-body workout for athletes. Competitive climbing is on track to make its debut in the 2020 Olympics. Climber's Rock opened in late 2008 and is located at 5155 Harvester Road in Burlington. To enter Five Point Academy, potential participants must fill out an application.
