It is my pleasure to provide you with this Fall Report, which I hope you will find informative. My staff and I have been very busy working on significant local improvements. We had 22 free compost give away days; Environment & Community Clean Up Days, local landscaping projects and physical infrastructure improvements throughout the ward, as well as hosting a Community Safety Forum, only to highlight a few projects that have taken place. With your help, we will continue to build neighbourhoods that are safe, healthy and vibrant. Friends, we have had to cope with significant challenges this summer, from the union garbage strike to the lengthy construction disruption of the right-of-way on St. Clair. I want to assure you that I have done, and I’m doing every effort to assist constituents throughout these disruptions and will continue to find ways to address concerns and provide timely resolutions. As always, I will continue to work long hours, lobby hard and fight for issues that are of importance to residents of Ward 17 and Torontonians at large. Transparency, accountability, financial sustainability and fairness will remain key issues that I will continue to demand for our community, for our City. Within the next few weeks, the 2010 Capital & Operating Budget for the City will be debated. As a member of the “Responsible Government Group”, we will bring forward a progressive, responsible, sustainable alternative budget. The City’s Operating budget has gone over $8 billion yearly –with approximately $500 million deficit. The operating deficit can NO longer be balanced with property tax increases; water rate increases, recreational user fees, and garbage bin tax increases. City programs and services must be prioritized, over-spending and waste must be controlled. I strongly believe that your input is crucial and paramount in getting a better understanding of what issues need to be tackled in our community, in our City. I hope that you will write, e-mail or call my office, to share your good ideas, and let me know how I can be of assistance. Friends, apart from all the initiatives that my office is working on, I intend to put extra time and energy to serve you better. Together we can “GET MORE THINGS DONE” for Davenport.
