Designed to facilitate and accelerate the growth of - and value creation by - the Canadian UVS sector
The Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (CCUVS) will create opportunities for economic growth and for innovationspillover by unifying university, government, and industry interests in the aerial, marine and land UVS applications across
Canada.
The CCUVS, armed with a strong contingent of Canadian UVS firms, post secondary researchers, research centres, governmentorganizations and military will create opportunities by:
1) Increasing and defining Canadian test and evaluation expertise
2) Facilitating networking within the Canadian UVS industry
3) Acting as the first point of contact for international interests to explore Canadian collaboration
4) Marketing CCUVS nationally and internationally
5) Facilitating the commercialization of research
6) Acting as a facilitator and change agent for UVS policies and regulations
The CCUVS is now open for business and is welcoming inquiries from platform and payload manufacturers. The CCUVS can offersolutions for your testing and evaluation needs. Centre for UVS Functions
The Centre’s functional model was developed using empirical research on cluster initiatives, analysis of various Canadian andinternational cluster initiative models, and feedback from Canadian UVS stakeholders. The functional model incorporates 12
segmented, but interconnected functions residing within three broad levels of activity.
Level I: Strategic architecture development activities centre on creating the structures that will facilitate both market andproduct expansion. Level I functions include:
- Participant identification and collaboration
- Promotion of the Canadian UVS sector
- Policy and regulatory development
- Proactive stakeholder engagement
Level II: Baseline market development activities focus on developing markets for existingproducts and routines for future product development. Level II functions include:
- Collecting market intelligence
- Canadian military liaison
- Civil application coordination
- Compete for international contracts
Level III: Core competency development activities facilitate the development of newproducts and the development of core competencies for the Canadian UVS sector. Level III
functions include:
- Teamed research and development
- Test and evaluation
- Training
- Technology commercialization
CCUVS Facilities and Personnel
The headquarters of the Centre is in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This facilitates Departmentof National Defence range access to establish a strong test and evaluation capability.
Combined with the UVS cluster in Calgary, these two locations create a UVS sector corridorthat envelops one of the largest regional UVS clusters in Canada, one of the largest UVS
test ranges in Canada, and the military’s core UVS research facilities at Defence Researchand Development-Canada, Suffield. The location of the CCUVS also provides access tosupporting industry clusters such as wireless, global positioning and nanotechnology,
while also offering access to some of the largest non-military demand side industries suchas energy, forestry, agriculture and mining.
The Centre commenced operations on September 8, 2006. The centre will follow a threephasedevelopment model, with additional functionality and resources added at eachsubsequent phase.
