The CANA Group of Companies originated in Calgary, Alberta in 1942 with the incorporation of Burns & Dutton Concrete and Construction Company Ltd. (B&D). In 1970 Burns & Dutton was renamed CANA Construction Co. Ltd. (CANA). The CANA Group of Companies includes CANA, ACE and Shepard Development.

The Simpson Family has owned and managed the company for 46 of the 67 years of corporate history. John Simpson took over as President of CANA from his father Jack in 1985. CANA has a long history of profitability and a solid record within the community.

With 67 years of experience in the Alberta marketplace, CANA has built a reputation for the ability to deliver projects on budget and on schedule. In addition to the Construction Management structure, CANA has provided services under Stipulated Lump Sum contracts, Fixed Fee contracts, Design Build Services, and Project Management Services. We have the ability to provide our own forces work in executing concrete placing and finishing, rough carpentry, installation of doors, frames hardware and washroom accessories.

Some significant CANA projects include the Calgary International Airport, Petro Canada Centre, Bow Valley Squares 1 to 4, the Performing Arts Centre, the Pengrowth Saddledome, Rockyview Hospital, the Hyatt Hotel and the Convention Centre, The Calgary Courts Centre as well as Spruce Meadows. A major portion of Mount Royal College and more than 50% of the University of Calgary facilities including the U of C Jack Simpson Gymnasium, named after our founder, have been completed by CANA Construction.

Major projects currently underway include the Calgary Courts Centre Phase 2, the Rockyview Hospital Expansion, SMART Technologies, the University of Calgary’s Taylor Family Digital Library and High Density Library, WestJet Campus Phase I, the Athletic Ice Complex at Canada Olympic Park and the new Telus World of Science Centre.

ACE is one of the most progressive utility contractors in Alberta, with over 50 years of service in the industry. ACE Construction is very diversified, dealing with all aspects of overhead and underground power line design and construction, installation of fibre optics, traffic intersections, street light, telecommunications, and cable television. The list of clients that ACE Construction deals with is substantial and includes electric utilities, City of Calgary, developers, telecommunication companies, oil sands developments, and independent power producers.

Shepard Development Corporation is a private Calgary based land development company providing commercial, retail and industrial leasing and ownership opportunities in Calgary. Shepard’s South East lands are surrounded by high income and growing communities including Douglasdale, McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne, Cranston and Lake Chaparral. This provides a client base and significant development opportunities for commercial, professional and retail services. Shepard’s North East lands at Jacksonport received land use in July of 2007. This project is comprised of one million square feet of industrial development and one million square feet of commercial retail development. CANA also has completed several project at Shepard Regional Centre including the Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Superstore, Calgary Co-op and over 150,000 square feet of other retail buildings.
