Description
As far back as 1996, attempts to bring a Junior A team to Campbell River were unsuccessful. A group from Edmonton had sought to establish a team in Campbell River; instead all they left was a very large sum of outstanding debt in the community that we only became aware of later. I, Ed Kingston, a Courtenay businessman and WHL scout, had recently taken over the managerial helm of the then fledgling Comox Valley Glacier Kings. One of the conditions I sought prior to taking over the team was that I had to retain the invaluable marketing and coaching experience of Dave Sales, a former BCHL coach and the current Head Coach of the Glacier Kings. We became very close friends and at the end of that season we sought to purchase the Kings; however that offer was quickly turned down. We realized that the hockey gods never slam one door shut without opening another one. Racking our brains, we went to Campbell River to watch the Winter Games in Strathcona Gardens; the fan support was unbelievable! We met with Mr. Bill Reekie, arena manager, and ran an idea past him, "What about Junior B hockey in Campbell River!" He thought it was a great idea and stated "I think you should make a presentation to the Gardens Sports Commission", so we did and the response was unbelievable, giving it an immediate rubber stamp and endorsing the possibility for a Junior "B" expansion franchise in Campbell River.
