Cada-Canadian Alliance

Description

CADA was formed in Toronto, Ontario in 1986, and the BC chapter in January 1992 in Vancouver, British Columbia. CADA was formed in response to impending Status of the Artist Legislation in Canada. This legislation, modeled on a union structure, would have allowed the establishment of a single bargaining unit organization for all types of dance (commercial, ballet, modern etc.). It was felt that existing entertainment industry organizations did not adequately represent the needs of dancers working in the arts environment, and that a grass roots organization, made up of the dancers it represented would be in a better position to develop policies regarding working conditions and pay scales for the arts. We are currently developing a national Basic Dance Agreement and related contracts to suit the funding arrangements found in the arts in Canada.
