Description

The International Financial Centre of Montreal is a non-profit organization that was created in 1986. It was an initiative of Quebec's Finance Department in collaboration with the Montreal Exchange and the City of Montreal. The Centre was created in a context of change, deregulation and globalization of financial services. At around the same time, models were emerging in Dublin, Ireland (International Financial Services Centers 1987) and Brussels, Belgium (Centres de coordination 1982). The role conferred on the Centre was to promote Montreal as an international centre of finance as well as promoting the related tax program. The tax program for international finance centres was created to exempt activities related to international financial transactions from Quebec taxes so that they would be carried out in Montreal rather than elsewhere in the world. The mandate therefore involves working to increase the volume of international financial operations and to keep them in Montreal, as well as developing expertise in international finance. To this end, the Government of Quebec launched a number of initiatives to increase the industry's competitiveness, which are based in large part on the quality of the available workforce. Among these initiatives, we should mention the creation in Montreal of the Derivatives Institute of the Montreal Exchange, l'Institut de Finance Mathematique de Montreal and the implementation of training programs in financial services management. ...
