Description

In 1992, following the Provincial Government's policy initiative "Challenges and Opportunities", Brantwood implemented a Community Plan to repatriate individuals to their home communities. Schedule I facilities across the Province were closed and individuals moved into group homes within the community. This plan was successful in providing community living for over 100 people who previously resided in institutions. Originally known as the Brant Sanatorium, it opened in 1913 to provide residential care for tuberculosis patients. In 1959, the emphasis switched to the provision of care for chronically ill persons. In 1964, a division was opened for children with developmental and physical handicaps. By 1969, we were caring for 129 children. In 1980, the chronic care division closed, and the facility's name was changed to Brantwood Residential Development Centre to reflect our new mandate. In November 1999, the residential component of the main facility closed. For the first time since 1913, 25 Bell Lane was not required as an institutional residence. Today, Brantwood provides services for approximately 69 individuals who live in 12 group homes in the Brantford and Brant County. Thanks to the generous support of Brant United Way, Brantwood is also able to provide a Community Day Program for individuals who live in the community.
