Description

In an age when the personal care and service of an owner operated small business has given way to large multi-national chains, a family run business seems more like a memory than a reality. Bourk's Ignition Ltd. is just such a business who's automotive service and wholesale parts company has thrived throughout seven decades of increased industry pressure and shifting consumer demands. The Bourk's story is a refreshing tale that began in 1942, with Bob and Myrtle Bourk distributing batteries out of their basement in Belleville, Ontario. Within two short years their strong entrepreneurial spirit and hard work grew their small company into a Supertest Station locating in Smiths Falls, Ontario. By securing a service contract in 1944 with United Motors, later to be known as AC Delco, Bourk's ignition was well on its way to expansion into Ottawa, Kingston, Cornwall, Renfrew and Hull becoming well known in the trade as a dependable source of knowledge and personal service. By the end of the 1940's Bourk's had received several major service contracts and franchises, growing into a major distribution and service centre for AC Delco products. 1951 marked the introduction of it's second generation as Tom Bourk, a nephew of Bob and Myrtle, joined the company, and soon after acquired major shareholder status, thus becoming the President of Bourk's Ignition Limited. It is from this point forward that the Bourk's reputation preceded itself as success never overshadowed service. ...
