The founders of Birth Roots Doula Collective Inc., Tara Laba, CD(DONA) Deanna Momtchilov, CD(DONA) and Julia P. Allen, CD(DONA) met in a doula training course in 1999. We formed Birth Roots Doula Collective Inc. in June of 2000 to make Birth Doula services available to as many Winnipeg women as possible. One of our first tasks was to create our Values Statement that serves as both a guide and a foundation to the care we provide. Since then, our Collective has grown to include a comprehensive range of services for the childbearing year, as well as many dynamic new members. Are you wondering what CD(DONA) means? It indicates that the doula is certified by Doulas of North America, the premier doula organization representing over 4000 doulas worldwide. In January of 2001, we incorporated Postpartum Doula services into the range of services we provide. After celebrating our 1st Anniversary in June 2001, we designed the Parenting and Birth Fair, a free afternoon of workshops and over thirty local information booths. Our goal in creating this larger-scale project was to offer the educational and referral aspects of our care to as many women as possible, in a fun and supportive environment. We held three more Fairs over the years, making lots of friends and educating many families in the process.
