Benedict Labre House

Description

The House was established in 1952 by Tony Walsh. The initial mission of the House was to provide essential services, food, clothes and a sense of belonging to those in need. The House was established in the area of Montreal known as Griffin town. It was a predominantly English Irish population and the area was considered to be in need. The intervening years have seen the loss of the Griffin town community and its residents. The House in the early eighties began to serve a community of homeless, mainly men and Anglophone. The mix of guests now reflects the overall population of Montreal as to culture, ethnicity and language. Currently we serve a regular group of over 500, consisting of men, women and even some family groups. The mission has remained the same, which is to provide for those in need. We have relied on volunteer groups to provide much of the essential services, either through donations or the preparation and serving of meals...
