Founded in 1958, the Alberta Shorthand Reporters Association (ASRA) is a non-profit professional association representing approximately 350 court reporters, broadcast captioners, and communication access realtime translation (CART) providers from across Alberta, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories. Using computerized shorthand machines and state-of-the-art technology called computer-aided transcription (CAT), ASRA members write and translate the spoken word simultaneously to the printed word at speeds of 225 words per minute and higher.

Certified Shorthand Reporters or CSR(A)s are highly skilled professionals offering 21st century smart technology solutions to improve courtroom efficiency with their ability to provide the instant reading back of testimony, daily copy and expedited transcript services, and unparalled transcripts prepared from their shorthand notes which are highly valued by the judiciary, juries, prosecutors, and trial lawyers.

In addition to the services we provide to the legal and business community, many of our members also provide life-changing Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) and broadcast captioning services, which are an integral human rights issue for the hard of hearing and deaf community.

ASRA members provide court reporting services to nearly every law firm in the province of Alberta, many others throughout Canada and North America, along with the corporate clients they serve. In addition, our members provide realtime and transcript services for hearings, pre-trial matters such as Questioning for Discoveries, Federal Court, Tax Court of Canada, The Senate of Canada, Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, and Provincial Court criminal and civil proceedings including expedited and daily copy transcript services.

The ASRA is managed by a volunteer council of eight working members elected by the general membership and one public member appointed by the Government of Alberta’s Minister of Employment and Immigration who volunteer their time and expertise for the betterment of the association and their profession. The association ensures the highest levels of professionalism by offering its membership ongoing continuing education and certification opportunities as well as doing its utmost to assist in the administration of justice and human rights in the Province of Alberta.
