Description
The Applause Institute was registered in 1990 with the sole purpose of creating an Enrichment Program for young people in Toronto 's Black Community. Due to difficult economic times, these plans were put on hold until1996, when the first Applause Institute Annual Cotillion Ball was successfully held in Toronto . With traditional schooling focused on academics, Applause Institute promotes the skills necessary in the overall development of our young people, increasing confidence and self-esteem. Our workshop line-up includes Black history awareness, dining etiquette and social graces, personal care seminars, dancing skills and poise. The Cotillion Ball has added several new workshops to its professionally designed workshop roster - focusing on policing in the community, entrepreneurship and financial planning, adolescent health and well-being - to balance out our already extensive curriculum. In 1995, Toronto fashion entrepreneur, Ettie Dawkins decided that the idea of a Cotillion Ball would regain focus for our community, creating a lasting impact on the lives of its participants. Her daughter Naomi, who was about to turn 16 years old, provided the inspiration for setting up a non-traditional Debutante Ball. Prior to 1996, the last Cotillion Ball held by the Black community in Toronto was in 1968 and was organized by Mrs. Kathy Searles, an educator and Honorary Board Member. We honour Mrs. Searles annually with the eponymous award for Escort of the Year.
