GETTING LISTED: So now you have a web site and are ready to do business. Now the real work begins. In order for your web site to be successful you have to market it by way of advertising, promotion, joining newsgroups, mail lists & forums , getting links to your site from other web sites and search engine registration. The fact is, you have a company web site because you want to attract visitors. Web site visitors are measured by "hits," the number of times viewers receive information from your site's server. However, hits are a poor way to measure site traffic. What counts are page views, like how long the visitor stayed on your site, how many hot buttons he/she followed to the sections he/she read. As we've stated before, your web site is one of literally millions of pages of online information. And no one search engine or directory lists every single page displayed on the the Internet's World Wide Web. And as we've said, you must promote your site to attract visitors to it. The majority of visits arrive from somewhere else on the web. Search engines, which attempt to catalog web sites by topic, result in a good deal of web site traffic. For example, a person can search for "books" and get a list of several thousand sites that will in some fashion relate to "books." However, you will also end up with a number of sites that don't have anything to do with "books." There are 13 major search engines/directories. These are Yahoo! (the most popular directory), Google (the most popular search engine), HotBot, LookSmart, MSN, AllTheWeb, Netfind (AOL), Lycos, AltaVista, NorthernLight, Excite, WebCrawler, ScrubTheNet, and Open Directory. For Canadians listing with www.canada.com , www.yahoo.ca , www.google.ca , www.msn.ca can be very helpful. In the United Kingdom, we recommend www.god.co.uk or any of the major search engines and directories British equivalents. There are new search engines popping up all the time on the Internet. Since each search engine organizes, acquires, stores and categorizes its information differently, the same search on different search engines is likely to turn up different results. To get listings, we strongly suggest you hire a reputable expert to submit your site for you. You of course can submit your site yourself, but you'll need to prepare several kinds of information. Your page titles are most important to some search engines. Your home page title should convey the essence of your site and each subsequent page title should explain what is on that page. The next suggestion would is meta tags - information that is placed in the HTML document of your site. These tags will not be seen by the public, but are be accessed by robots/spiders and other information retrievers of the search engines visiting your site. Unfortunately, not all search engines recognize meta tags. Actually, fewer and fewer search engines utilize meta tags as a way of listing and ranking web sites. This is due primarily to unscrupulous individuals abusing their use. Still, it's worth adding them for the searchers that still are inclined to make use of them.
