AFS designs, develops and produces core components for the international automotive sector, specializing in the alternative fuel marketplace. We supply electronic engine management controllers, natural gas handling components and associated software to manufacturers of new vehicles and stationary engines, as well as to aftermarket fleet conversion specialists. Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs) - Vehicles with engines that operate on a fuel other than gasoline or diesel. These vehicles are designed and manufactured by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or are converted in the "aftermarket".

As a designer and manufacturer of core technology items for engine control, AFS has a toolbox of components from which to design complete, integrated engine management systems. We’ll use our own components if we have what’s needed, but we’re happy to integrate components from other manufacturers if they have something we don’t – total value is always the end goal.

Dr. Checkel is a Mechanical Engineering professor at the University of Alberta where his teaching duties include the supervision of several alternative fuel vehicle design projects as well as specialized graduate courses on combustion and environmental effects of engine emissions. Dr. Checkel has worked with AFS since 1996, primarily on research projects involving engine exhaust aftertreatment, emissions measurement and internal combustion studies of natural gas and dual fuel.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) - the original vehicle or engine manufacturer that provides the original design and materials for assembly and manufacture of their product.
