At the age of 18, John D. MacDonald had a dream of setting up his own printing press. In the fall of 1891, his dream was realized with the opening of a job printing shop in the town of Pictou. The business began to grow under the ambitious direction of MacDonald and in December 22, 1893 he purchased a second-hand newspaper press and launched The Pictou Advocate. The future looked promising until a fire in the early hours of a January morning in 1900 destroyed the entire press and offices.

In 2010 Metro Guide Publishing joined the Advocate family with with them over 40 years of experience in the publishing industry. With thirteen magazines, Metro Guide Publishing serves our Atlantic Canadian communities at home and promotes our many talents to the world. Advocate Printing and Publishing has earned a reputation as a company that combines experienced workmanship with modern technology to meet the ever changing needs of its customers.

Advocate’s web printing division was a pioneer in Atlantic Canada’s flyer and print publications market. Today, with over twenty five years of experience, Advocate has gained a reputation as the premiere producer for quality colour printing. Advocate’s web team is renowned for efficiency, craftsmanship and customer service, shipping millions of copies every month throughout Eastern Canada and North America.

Advocate Printing & Publishing, the largest independent printer in Atlantic Canada, was founded in 1891. Headquartered in Pictou, Nova Scotia, with locations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the Advocate services the Atlantic Provinces, the eastern seaboard and across Canada. The company includes five newspapers and 24 community and trade magazines, a flyer distribution company, a commercial photography studio, creative design studio and a pub in downtown Pictou.
