ALBERTA BEVERAGE CONTAINER RECYCLING CORPORATION (ABCRC) is a provincially incorporated not-for-profit product stewardship corporation. Our mandate is to be the agent for the beverage manufacturers to operate a common collection system for registered containers, to be responsible for recycling beverage containers, to comply with regulation and BCMB by-laws, and to promote the economic and efficient collection of beverage containers. Our Board of Directors consists of representatives of the beverage industry including the soft-drink, water and juice sectors. The birth of the ABCRC operation was in response to a need for a system to support new regulations. The single serving, non-refillable containers of the time had lead to a litter problem. In an effort to address the growing problem, the Beverage Container Recycling Regulation was created in 1972 and incorporated a series of regulations which required manufacturers who sold beverages in Alberta to be responsible for their empty containers. The initial concern focused on soft drink and liquor containers but later water and juice containers were included in the regulation and more recently tetrapak juice boxes. Some beverage companies attempted to collect their own products but eventually bottle depots had to be organized as effective collection centres.
